The Chamber Music Academy is a special support program for the young musicians of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra and is also affiliated with it. It is open to all permanent members and prospective members of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra, as well as to interested external young people from the canton of Thurgau and the surrounding area, and is offered as a semester course.

Repertoire and line-up

The chamber music groups and repertoire are put together by the chamber music director, Gabriel Estarellas Pascual, based on the individual level of the participants. Groups from duo to quintet, sextet or larger are possible, and both pure wind and string formations and mixed ensembles can be formed. Groups with piano and percussion are also an integral part of the Chamber Music Academy.

Young talent

Prospective members who would like to play in the orchestra but are not quite ready yet can also be integrated into chamber music groups. They will learn how to play together, how to listen to each other and how to coordinate the intonation in a smaller setting with a repertoire of their choice, thus preparing them for playing in an orchestra.

Rehearsal work

The young musicians organize joint rehearsals and also have to think about the design of the work. In this way, the deepening of technical and musical skills improves the interaction, the sound of the orchestra, improves the level of each individual and thus also that of the orchestra as a whole.

Orchestra camp

Chamber music is also present at the annual orchestra camp in Magliaso. A large part of the traditional Easter concert in the Centro Evangelico in Magliaso is formed by the chamber music groups.

Costs and dates

The cost of the Chamber Music Academy is 80.- per member and semester.

Each group receives a set number of lessons per semester, in between the groups are expected to rehearse on their own and organize these dates themselves. At the end of each semester there is a final concert, so two fixed concerts per year.

A master class is organized once a year, for which, for example, professional soloists who play with the Thurgau Youth Orchestra or university professors are asked.

Competitions and performances

Groups that are interested in taking part in competitions can register for them after consultation with the chamber music director and will be prepared for them.

Another option, if requested, is to perform at cantonal events, company events, festivals, etc.

Support

Special thanks for the financial support of the Chamber Music Academy go to the Thurgauer Kantonalbank, the lottery fund of the canton of Thurgau and Ernst and Ulrike Uhlmann, Stettfurt.

The Thurgau Music Schools Association (VMTG) welcomes and supports any activity that contributes to the promotion of musical education and training. The Chamber Music Academy of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra is undoubtedly an effort to encourage young people to make music together and to a high standard. On the one hand, it promotes the musical experience of the young talents, and on the other hand, it also promotes the social skills of the participants, who learn through playing together to listen to each other, but also to take on leadership roles.

Martina Reichert, President of the Thurgau Music Schools Association

Although I teach at the university, I think the most important work is done with even younger musicians. The fact that the members of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra play like chamber musicians in the orchestra is a great testament to the great work that is done there!

Chiara Enderle Samatanga, cellist at the Carmina Quartett (HKB).
