PORTRAIT

In its almost 60 years of existence, the Thurgau Youth Orchestra has developed into a nationally known musical ensemble. Founded as a pure string orchestra, it has been playing in a symphonic formation with 50-70 musicians aged 10 to 27 since 2015. For several years, the members of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra have come from all over the canton of Thurgau as well as from southern Germany, Vorarlberg and the cantons of Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Appenzell and Zurich. Under the professional artistic direction of Gabriel Estarellas Pascual, it develops two to three different concert programs every year.

Concept

The main task of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra is to enable young, interested musicians from the canton of Thurgau and the surrounding area to experience demanding classical works at the highest level and thus promote their musical and personal development. The Thurgau Youth Orchestra plays an important role in promoting the talent of young string, wind and drum players as well as in promoting young talent.

For those who aspire to a professional career in the music industry as well as for those who simply enjoy playing music at a high level.

In addition, the Thurgau Youth Orchestra wants to be open to all students from all music schools throughout the canton and beyond the region.

Repertoire and concerts

In addition to the standard repertoire from the Renaissance to the modern era, contemporary music is also very important to the Thurgau Youth Orchestra. Numerous works have been premiered over the years.

The Thurgau Youth Orchestra organizes several concerts every year, mainly in the canton of Thurgau. The spring concerts are in mid-March and the autumn concerts in mid-September. At Easter, the orchestra camp traditionally holds the Easter concert in the Centro Evangelico in Magliaso.

The Thurgau Youth Orchestra also tours at home and abroad and is invited to well-known festivals.

Importance and successes

Since its founding, the Thurgau Youth Orchestra has been an integral part of cultural life in the canton of Thurgau and is known for its high musical quality. The Thurgau Youth Orchestra has won numerous prizes in competitions and many members continue their studies at renowned conservatories in order to pursue a career as a musician.

Education and development

Great importance is attached to both artistic and social education. In addition to playing in the orchestra, the young musicians have the opportunity to take part in regular chamber music lessons at the Chamber Music Academy affiliated with the Thurgau Youth Orchestra. This promotes everyone’s initiative, communication and social cohesion among each other, which in turn benefits the interaction and safety of the individual players and ensures the quality of the orchestra.

In addition, the Thurgau Youth Orchestra offers particularly talented orchestra members the opportunity to perform solo with the orchestra.

Master classes

Once a year, the Thurgau Youth Orchestra organizes a master class with professional musicians. Mostly with soloists who play concerts with the Thurgau Youth Orchestra, but university professors are also invited. Depending on which instrument is being taught, participants can take individual or chamber music lessons.

The courses are public and take place at various locations in the canton of Thurgau, with the dates depending on the availability of the musician involved.

The cost of the master classes is included in the membership fee for the Chamber Music Academy of 80.- per semester.

It is a great opportunity and a great motivation for the young musicians to benefit from the experience of renowned soloists and professors.

Orchestra camp

In addition to the weekly rehearsals and intensive preparation for the concerts, the youth orchestra goes to the orchestra camp in Magliaso (TI) every year over Easter. These are always eventful and happy days, during which the works for the autumn concerts are worked on together, chamber music is played and, of course, there is plenty of time for games and fun.

The Easter concert traditionally takes place on Easter Sunday, which is mostly performed by chamber music groups.

The orchestra camp is an important time for social cohesion and the integration of new members.

Community and support

The Thurgau Youth Orchestra relies on the support of the local community, including our main sponsor, the Thurgauer Kantonalbank, the numerous foundations, the passive members, the generous sponsors and the lottery fund of the canton of Thurgau, as well as the friends of the JOTG, who help to maintain the orchestra’s activities. This support is crucial for the orchestra’s continued success and growth.

Rehearsals

String rehearsals: Every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., except during school holidays, in the auditorium of the Kreuzlingen Cantonal School.

Wind instrument rehearsals and Tutti rehearsals: The full rehearsals, usually two weekends with the wind instruments, as well as all wind instrument rehearsals take place in the Paul Reinhart and Martin Haffter Weinfelden schoolhouse station.

In short: The Thurgau Youth Orchestra is an important institution in the youth music life of the canton of Thurgau and offers young musicians a platform to develop their talent and make a contribution to the cultural landscape of the region.

Brilliant performance.
The Thurgau Youth Orchestra gave an acclaimed concert on Sunday in the Romanshorn Protestant Church to mark its 50th anniversary. The numerous visitors were delighted. The young musicians under the direction of Gabriel Estarellas Pascual impressed with their concentrated and enthusiastic ensemble, as well as with their numerous dialogues between registers and orchestra in Schubert's sixth symphony.
