Cutting the Diamond

The Thurgau Youth Orchestra is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Founded by Martin Sigrist, it is now directed by Gabriel Estarellas Pascual. The orchestra is one of the region’s beacons. Nevertheless, it is still far too little known.

WEINFELDEN. Martin Sigrist, now retired in Schaffhausen, directed the Thurgau Youth Orchestra, which was formerly called the Oberthurgau Youth Orchestra, from 1965 to 2008, 43 long years. The string orchestra’s performances under its conductor, who always wore long skirts as a trademark, were legendary in Thurgau, especially the interpretations of modern and contemporary music. The young people from Thurgau delivered fresh, committed performances that will remain unforgettable for many music lovers in the region. And there is hardly a professional musician from Thurgau in the field of string instruments who did not grow up musically in this youth orchestra.
