Gabriel Estarellas Pascual has been the conductor of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra for 10 years. In this interview he now takes stock.
Mr Estarellas, you have been the conductor of the Thurgau Youth Orchestra for 10 years. This successful orchestra used to be called the Oberthurgau Youth Orchestra. How did you get this job?
I was invited to perform as a soloist with the orchestra and the opportunity arose to go on a tour abroad in addition to the concerts in Switzerland, where I was able to experience the work with a youth orchestra up close. The then conductor of the Oberthurgau Youth Orchestra, Martin Sigrist, retired shortly afterwards and wanted to hand the orchestra over to someone who would continue to run it with heart and soul, just like him. He asked me if I would like to take over the orchestra and I was immediately enthusiastic about it. It was a leap into the cold water that was worth it.
