When Romanticism was still young

What is better than when young people meet to make music? When they play young, sorry, young-at-heart music. The Thurgau Youth Orchestra’s program captivated with beautiful sounds ranging from Ludwig van Beethoven to Carl Maria von Weber and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The well-attended Frauenfeld town hall provided the stylistically appropriate ambience last Saturday.

It was as if master builder Josef Purtscher had just left the former Frauenfeld Tagsatzungssaal. Built in 1793 with its wonderful tiled stoves and tasteful stucco, it provided the stage setting for the acoustic rendezvous with two celebrators and one “after-party”. Ludwig van Beethoven’s death anniversary will be 190 years old in 2017, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy died 170 years ago and opera pioneer Carl Maria von Weber had the 190th “anniversary of his death” last year. Under the direction of their conductor Gabriel Estarellas Pascual, in collaboration with the section leaders Seth Quistad, trombone and Michael Reid, clarinet, the Thurgauer Jugendorchester quickly made it clear where dead composers are still very much alive: in their works, in their music and in a fresh, cheeky interpretation.
